Installing

Warning and Error Messages

Ø Could not write to C:\windows\system\wininet.dll or urlmon.dll

Setup could not write to C:\windows\system\wininet.dll.  Another program must still be in use.  You may get this wininet.dll warning message when it seems that all programs are closed.

It is likely that you will get this message 2 times.  Once for a file called "wininet.dll" and another for 'urlmon.dll".  The files are used by your Windows Active Desktop so they are always in use, even when other programs are closed.  In both cases you can click on ignore and the program will install successfully.  (Note: Not all Windows 95 computers have Active Desktops).

Ø Setup could not read form the file D:\Program/Mssetup.dll.

It is likely that you have Norton Utilities, or Norton Anti Virus or another antivirus program. These programs will prevent the set up program from running successfully.  You must turn off your Norton programs.  (Double click on the Norton Logo on your task bar and select "close" or "exit").

Office 2000

Ø When You Start Teacher’s Partner it Tries To Convert the Database

If you have Office 2000 professional edition (with Access) loaded on your computer, when you try to run Teacher’s Partner, Access 2000 will try to convert the file to a new format. Because the file is a .mde file it will not be successful.

We have discussed this issue with Microsoft and they explained that there is only one solution (although it is not very convenient).  You need to uninstall Access 2000, install Teacher’s Partner, and then you can reinstall Access 2000.

Installing to other Locations

Ø Installing to Other Locations other than C:\Tpartner

It is essential that you install Teacher’s Partner to the default folder recommended by the setup program.  Although the setup program will allow you to change the location for installing the program, if you do not install the program to the default location a number of features in the program will not work correctly.  If, after you install the program to the default folder, you would like to install it again to a second location (perhaps for a second teacher) you may do so.  For more information about configuring your computer to work with multiple users see:

Set-up configurations for Standalone computers.

Teacher Codes

Ø What is the code needed for?

With Teacher's Partner 2000 you had 60 days or 60 uses of the program before you needed to register a code with Leading Education. (Teacher's Partner 3.0 only gave you 30 days or 30 uses).  This feature allowed you to have a trial of Teacher's Partner.  If you decided that you did not want the program you could send the CD back within 60 days for a full refund.

Teacher's Partner 2000 PLUS did not require a code.

Teacher's Partner V5 does not require a code.  However, this version will provide you with a reminder notice in June 2002 to check our website for upgrade availability.

Networking

Ø Is it possible to use Teacher's Partner in a network environment?

Yes.  Teacher's Partner has been used successfully on both Novell and Windows NT network systems. The way to do this is to install Teacher's Partner to the hard drive of each workstation and then create teacher files on the file server. Teacher's Partner can be configured so that when the program file is started it links to a teacher file on the server. This allows Teacher's Partner to work fast and effectively in a network environment with a minimum amount of network traffic.

Ø What is the advantage of a network environment?

A network environment allows any teacher to work at any computer.  When a teacher starts Teacher's Partner the program links to the teacher's personal data file.

Ø What is the purpose of the school file?

The school file is a place in a drive that all teachers have the right to use. Teachers will be able to send their report cards through the network to the school file.  When Teacher's Partner is started it automatically links to both the school file and the teacher file.  The school file exists primarily for 4 purposes:

1. It allows teachers to view (but not change) the entire report cards for any student in the school.

2. It allows any teacher to record a behaviour problem for any student in the school.

3. It ensures that the averages for grades 7 and 8 students are grade averages rather than class averages.

4. It serves as a convenient back up of all report card data.

Ø How does a school file differ from a teacher file?

Structurally they are identical.  A school file is really just a copy of the teacherdata.mdb file placed in a location that all teachers have access to.

Networking with Novell

Ø How Do You Configure Teacher's Partner to Work on a Novell Network?

1. Install Teacher’s Partner to the Tpartner folder of your C drive (this is the default installation location and it is essential that you install here).

2. Before a teacher can use the program in a network environment, each teacher will need to make a copy of the teacherdata.mdb file located in the TPartner folder and then paste it to the teacher's personal drive. (i.e. the G drive or H drive).  This can be done by the teacher or by the site administrator.

3. You should also make a copy of the school.mdb file in the C:\Tpartner folder and paste it to the shared drive (e.g. the "I" drive).

4. Start Teacher’s Partner by clicking on Start > Programs > Teacher’s Partner > Open Teacher’s Partner.

5. When the program first starts it will automatically be linked to the Teacherdata.mdb file in the Tpartner folder of the C drive.

6. To link the copy of the program file to the teacher file on the G drive, click on "Link to Files" in the File Manager.

7. In step one enter the name and location of the school file (e.g. I:\school.mdb) and then click on the "Link to School File" button.

8. In step two, type in the location of the teacher file on the teacher’s personal drive. (e.g. in the bottom box where it says "C:\Tpartner\" type in "G:\teacherdata.mdb")

9. Click on the "Link to Teacher File" button.

10. If you get a message that it could not find the file then you did not type in the file name correctly – it is not case sensitive but it must have the right characters, spaces, and punctuation. It must also end with the extension .mdb.

11. After the file has been opened you will need to enter your registration information.

Ø How does each teacher access their own teacher file?

The network login system looks after that.  When a teacher logs into the network, a drive (usually a G or H drive) is defined as that teacher's personal drive.  Each teacher has a file named teacherdata.mdb stored in their personal drive.  If Teacher’s Partner is set up as described above, when the program is launched it automatically links to the teacherdata.mdb file in the teacher's personal drive.  It also automatically links to school file on the shared drive.

Networking with Windows NT

Ø How Do You Configure Teacher's Partner to Work on a Network?

Load Teacher's Partner to the C drive of the workstation just as if you were going to use it as a stand-alone product.  Teacher’s Partner must be loaded to the C drive of each workstation that the program is used on.  Before a teacher can use the program in a network environment, each teacher will need to make a copy of the teacherdata.mdb file located in the TPartner folder and then paste it the teacher's personal drive (i.e. the G drive or H drive ). The first time you start Teacher's Partner you will be linked to the teacherdata.mdb file on the C drive.  Fill in the registration form.

1. Install Teacher’s Partner to the Tpartner folder of your C drive (this is the default installation location and it is essential that you install here).

2. Before a teacher can use the program in a network environment, each teacher will need to make a copy of the teacherdata.mdb file located in the TPartner folder and then paste it to the teacher's personal drive (i.e. the G drive or H drive ). This can be done by the teacher or the site administrator.

3. Start Teacher’s Partner by clicking on Start > Programs > Teacher’s Partner > Open Teacher’s Partner.

4. When the program first starts it will automatically be linked to the Teacherdata.mdb file in the Tpartner folder of the C drive.

5. Exit Teacher’s Partner.

6. Double click on My Computer.

7. Double click on the C drive.

8. Double click on the Tpartner folder.

9. Single click on the Tpartner.mde file (it looks like a key with a lock on it).

10. Click on the edit menu and then select copy.

11. Click on the edit menu again and select paste.

12. A file will appear somewhere in the folder called "Copy of Tpartner.mde".

13. Right click on "Copy of Tpartner.mde" and select Send to > Desktop (create shortcut).

14. Close the Tpartner folder and go back to your desktop.

15. Double click on the "Copy of Tpartner" icon. This will start the second copy of Teacher’s Partner program. You will notice that as the program loads up it is still linked to Teacher A’s teacher file.

16. When you get to the Start Screen with the large apple click on Other Tools > File Manager > Create a New Blank Teacher File.

17. Create a new blank teacher file using the examples as a guide. (e.g C:\Tpartner\Smith.mdb).

18. To link the copy of the program file to Teacher B’s teacher file, click on "Link to Files" in the File Manager.

19. Skip step one and go directly to step two.  In step two, type in the name of Teacher B’s teacher file (e.g. in the bottom box where it says "C:\Tpartner\" type in "C:\Tpartner\smith.mdb").

20. Click on the "Link to Teacher File" button.

21. If you get a message that it could not find the file then you did not type in the file name correctly – it is not case sensitive but it must have the right characters, spaces, and punctuation.  It must also end with the extension .mdb.

22. After the file has been opened you will need to enter the registration information for Teacher B.

Ø How does each teacher access their own teacher file?

The network login system looks after that.  When a teacher logs into the network, a drive (usually a G or H drive) is defined as that teacher's personal drive.  Each teacher has a file named teacherdata.mdb stored in their personal drive.  When Teacher's Partner is launched it automatically links to the teacherdata.mdb file in the teacher's personal drive.

Ø How Do You Configure Teacher's Partner to Work on a Windows NT Network?

1. Install Teacher’s Partner to the Tpartner folder of your C drive (this is the default installation location and it is essential that you install here).  Note that as you install you will probably receive a number of warning messages.  The first two will be about not being able to write to wininet.dll or urlmon.dll.  Click on ignore for both of these messages.  The next three messages refer to not being able to create "ink" files (because the security system prevents you from creating shortcut in the start menu).  Again you can click on ignore for each of these messages.

2. Before a teacher can use the program in a Windows NT network environment, each teacher will need to make a copy of the Tpartner.mde and the teacherdata.mdb files located in the TPartner folder and then paste it to the teacher's personal folder on the H drive (i.e. for a teacher named Smith he would paste these files in the Smith folder on the H drive).  The teacher or the site administrator can do this.

3. You should also make a copy of the school.mdb file in the C:\Tpartner folder and paste it to the shared drive (e.g. the "Common" folder in the H drive).

4. The teacher will then double click on the Tpartner.mde file in the teacher’s folder of the H drive.

5. When the program first starts it will automatically be linked to the Teacherdata.mdb file in the Tpartner folder of the C drive.

6. To link your copy of the program file to your teacher file on the H drive, click on "Link to Files" in the File Manager.

7. In step one enter the name and location of the school file (e.g. H:\Common\school.mdb) and then click on the "Link to School File" button.

8. In step two, type in the location of the teacher file on the teacher’s personal drive (e.g. in the bottom box where it says "C:\Tpartner\" type in "H:\Smith\teacherdata.mdb").

12. A teacher might also want to create a shortcut to the Tpartner.mde file in the H drive and paste it to his/her own personalized desktop.

Set up Configurations for Standalone Computers

Ø What is the best way for two teachers to share the same computer?

There are two methods for setting up so that two teachers can share a single computer.  The first method involves creating two copies of the Teacher’s Partner program file and then linking each one to different teacher files.  This is probably the best method and it is the most convenient in the long run.  However, it requires about 15 megabytes more space than Method 2.

Method 2 involves creating two teacher files but using only one program file. This method requires less disk space but means that each time a different teacher uses the program they have to link to a different file.

Method 1

1. Install Teacher’s Partner to the Tpartner folder of your C drive (this is the default installation location and it is essential that you install here).

2. Start Teacher’s Partner by clicking on Start > Programs > Teacher’s Partner > Open Teacher’s Partner.

3. Register Teacher A with name, division, etc.

4. Exit Teacher’s Partner.

5. Double click on My Computer.

6. Double click on the C drive.

7. Double click on the Tpartner folder.

8. Single click on the Tpartner.mde file (it looks like a key with a lock on it).

9. Click on the edit menu and then select copy.

10. Click on the edit menu again and select paste.

11. A file will appear somewhere in the folder called "Copy of Tpartner.mde".

12. Right click on "Copy of Tpartner.mde" and select Send to > Desktop (create shortcut).

13. Close the Tpartner folder and go back to your desktop.

14. Double click on the "Copy of Tpartner" icon.  This will start the second copy of Teacher’s Partner program.  You will notice that as the program loads up that it is still linked to Teacher A’s teacher file.

15. When you get to the Start Screen with the large apple click on Other Tools > File Manager > Create a New Blank Teacher File.

16. Create a new blank teacher file using the examples as a guide (e.g. C:\Tpartner\Smith.mdb).

17. To link the copy of the program file to Teacher B’s teacher file, click on "Link to Files" in the File Manager.

18. Skip step one and go directly to step two. In step two, type in the name of Teacher B’s teacher file (e.g. in the bottom box where it says "C:\Tpartner\" type in "C:\Tpartner\smith.mdb").

19. Click on the "Link to Teacher File" button.

20. If you get a message that it could not find the file then you did not type in the file name correctly – it is not case sensitive but it must have the right characters, spaces, and punctuation.  It must also end with the extension .mdb.

21. After the file has been opened you will need to enter the registration information for Teacher B.

Now Teacher A will be able to access his/her file by Start > Programs > Teacher’s Partner > Open Teacher’s Partner. Teacher B will access his or her file by double clicking on "Copy of Teacher’s Partner".

Method 2

1. Install Teacher’s Partner to the Tpartner folder of your C drive (this is the default installation location and it is essential that you install here).

2. Start Teacher’s Partner by clicking on Start > Programs > Teacher’s Partner > Open Teacher’s Partner.

3. Register Teacher A with name, division, etc. and enter pass code.

4. When you get to the Start Screen with the large apple click on Other Tools > File Manager > Create a New Blank Teacher File.

5. Create a new blank teacher file using the examples as a guide (e.g. C:\Tpartner\Smith.mdb).

6. To link the copy of the program file to Teacher B’s teacher file, click on "Link to Files" in the File Manager.

7. Skip step one and go directly to step two. In step two, type in the name of Teacher B’s teacher file (e.g. in the bottom box where it says "C:\Tpartner\" type in "C:\Tpartner\smith.mdb").

8. Click on the "Link to Teacher File" button.

9. If you get a message that it could not find the file then you did not type in the file name correctly – it is not case sensitive but it must have the right characters, spaces, and punctuation. It must also end with the extension .mdb.

10. After the file has been opened you will need to enter the registration information for Teacher B.

The above process allows two different teachers to use the same program file.  Each time Teacher’s Partner is started the user will need to check to see whose teacher file is linked to the program file.  (The teacher’s name will appear on the splash screen as the program loads).  If the program is linked to Teacher B’s teacher file and Teacher A wants to use the program, he/she will need to link back to his/her own teacher file by following steps 6,7,and 8.
